Internships
The Communication Department encourages majors to pursue internships during their time at Boston College. Internships provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom in a real world setting. They also help students define their interests, acquire practical experience, and begin building their own network.
Any senior major who has completed the requisite courses is eligible for Senior Internship Seminar, a graded three-credit course that counts as a communication elective. These internships serve as capstone experiences and help majors begin the transition away from college into a communication-related profession.Â
The Internship Practicum is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explore a particular career or field in-depth. The program will require you to develop skills and knowledge in a professional setting, while also requiring you to integrate those skills and knowledge into your academic education. After completing the internship practicum, you should have acquired additional professional and technical skills, as well as a deeper understanding of your interest in the field where your internship took place.Â
The program is open to majors with junior and senior standing. Potential interns must have completed the foundational courses in the communication major. In addition, they must have completed the application for this practicum course no later than the day before classes begin.Â
The Internship Director will notify students accepted to the program no later than the first day of classes and they will be registered for the course. Students cannot add the seminar to their own schedule.Â
Those students accepted for the program are responsible for securing an appropriate field placement, subject to the approval of the Director of the Senior Internship Seminar. Internship credit can only be awarded for a placement that offers professional-level supervision, requires skills consistent with the intern's academic experiences, and meets the test for an appropriate placement established by the internship program. Communication internship opportunities will be regularly sent via listserv. If you are interested in being added to the listserv, please email celeste.wells@bc.edu. Internships in communication and related fields can also be found on the Boston College Career Center website.

If you are accepted into the seminar, you are responsible for securing an appropriate internship, subject to the approval of the Internship Director. Internship credit can only be awarded for a placement that has a professional level of supervision, requires skills consistent with the academic experiences of the intern, and meets the guidelines for an appropriate placement established by the internship program, which are:
- Work 15-20 hours per week at their placement (in-person, hybrid, online)
- Attend periodic seminars with the Internship Director and complete all assignments.
- Meet all deadlines and complete all paperwork for the course, including a term research paper.Â
- Understand their position will result in academic credit if completed successfully alongside their integrated coursework provided by the Communication Department.
- Understand that their internship is conducted without guarantee or entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.
Grading in the internship program is based upon rigorous standards. Superior grades (i.e., A and A-) will be awarded only where there is demonstrable proof of superior work in both the academic seminar and the internship itself. The student’s direct supervisor at the placement must complete an evaluation at the end of the placement period in order for a grade to be issued.
The Department works with majors to find appropriate placements. The best internships offer the student a range of experiences, provide the opportunity to work on a meaningful project, and involve regular contact with a supervisor who is interested in the student's learning. Over the years the Department has developed an extensive network of outstanding internship opportunities. Recent internship placements include:
